Dubái^[1] o el Emirato de Dubái (en árabe: إمارة دبي, ʼMārh Dbay) es uno de los siete emiratos que integran desde 1971 los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Posee 4.114 km² y su población asciende a 2.262.000 habitantes (2008).^[2]

Dubái es actualmente uno de los destinos turísticos más cotizados del mundo. Su arquitectura excesiva y lujosa la ha posicionado como una de las ciudades más renombradas del Medio Oriente y del mundo.

Aparte de su playa más conocida, Jumeirah Beach, cuenta con el edificio más alto del mundo, el Burj Khalifa, un hotel suspendido en el mar que se dio a conocer como el único hotel siete estrellas del mundo, el Burj Al Arab, el centro comercial más grande del mundo, el Dubai Mall, la fuente más grande del mundo, la Dubai Fountain, las palmeras o islas artificiales Palm Jumeirah y las islas artificiales del mapamundi, las World Islands.

También cuenta con el puerto más grande del mundo y está prevista la inauguración del aeropuerto más grande del mundo para el 2012.

Entre los proyectos a futuro Dubái prevee la construcción de Dubailand, el parque de atracciones más grande del mundo, Dubai Sport City y en los alrededores un museo del Louvre y un museo de Guggenheim.

The Palm Jumeirah increased Dubai's shoreline by 100 percent after work started on it in 2001.

It features resort hotels, homes, luxury shopping and entertainment.

Though the entire island officially opened Thursday, parts of it already opened weeks ago -- including the Atlantis, The Palm, a sister to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas.

The Atlantis played host to the opening celebration Thursday night.

Stars including Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Robert De Niro, Janet Jackson and the Duchess of York were in attendance.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) -- A huge man-made island shaped like a date palm tree opened Thursday off the coast of Dubai with a celebrity-studded gala and a three-day party.
When work on the island began, a team of Dutch engineers were employed to create the Palm by using a technique called rainbowing -- a vessel dredging sand from the seabed and spraying and piling it onto the desired area and into the requested shape.
